Tales from the Mommy Trenches: Aiden Turns One

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009
What a messy boy!

What a messy boy!

Last week was Aiden’s first birthday and on Saturday we had a party for him.  Many family members came including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.  I just love children’s birthday parties.  I can remember throwing my oldest son, Jeremy, parties all through his childhood.  Now that he’s a teenager he no longer wants the swimming or ice skating parties I used to plan, but I sure love having a new little one.  I get to do the fun stuff all over again. We decorated the house with balloons and banners, bought snacks and beverages and most importantly, we ordered a cake. It was very cute, decorated with Sesame Street characters and “Happy 1st Birthday Aiden” written in brightly coloured icing.

Until now I have not given Aiden sugar, and generally plan to keep it at a minimum, but on this very special day I gave him a piece of cake and let him go to it.  Boy oh boy did he ever think that was the cat’s meow! I’ve never seen such enthusiasm go into eating.  The mess was something else!  But we took lots of pictures and video-taped the entire thing.  I think it will go down in our family history as the funniest first birthday experience ever.  Afterwards, as I was wiping his face with a moistened Shoo Foo Bamboo Face Towel, I laughed as I thought about how much quicker it would be to use a hose.

I want to capture these special memories and hold on to them not just for me, but so that I can show my children when they grow up and have kids of their own.  My grandmother gave me a photo album with pictures from my own childhood.  Every so often I like to pull it out and look at the photos.  It is funny to see how much fashion has changed (nice bellbottoms Dad) and to look for the family resemblance between me and my kids.  Someday Jeremy and Aiden can do the same.

Happy birthday Aiden!  I can’t believe how much you’ve grown.  I love you.

Hippy Grandma: Earth Friendly Treasures

Dear friends,

An inspiring call to conscious evolution, a clear articulation of what is needed in these times.

The Obama Administration has asked the “Evolutionary Leaders” to communicate about what is transpiring on the planet, and how we can change the course of the unprecedented events that are challenging this planet. This is a window of opportunity for this information to be conveyed to the Obama Administration.

The Evolutionary Leaders like Deepak Chopra, Gregg Braden, Michael Beckwith and many, many others, gathered together to write up the
information to present to the Obama Administration. They are also asking us to sign a petition to show the Administration how many people are in favor for these changes to occur. They need 10,000 signatures. We need your help to reach that number and beyond! Below is the information presented to the New Administration.

The petition link can be found here:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/248704259

By the Evolutionary Leaders
The human family is in the midst of the most significant transformation of consciousness since its emergence in Africa over one hundred thousand years ago. Consciousness has been evolving for billions of years from the first cell to us. We are becoming aware that through our own consciousness the universe can know itself. This awareness reveals incredible new potential for our individual and collective humanity.

Simultaneously, we are the first species on this Earth aware that we can destroy ourselves by our own action. This may be the greatest wake-up call to the evolution of consciousness since the origin of Homo Sapiens. We now realize that we are affecting our own evolution by everything we do. This knowledge awakens in us the aspiration to become more conscious through subjective practices including meditation, reflection, prayer, intuition, creativity, and conscious choice making that accelerate our evolution in the direction of unity consciousness and inspire us to deeply align our collective vision.

THE CHALLENGE
At this juncture in human history, urgent global crises challenge us to learn to live sustainably, in harmony and gratitude with one another and with the living universe. The changes required of humanity are broad, deep, and far reaching. Only by acting swiftly and creatively can we birth a planetary culture that will bring well-being to every form of life in the Earth community. The good news is that a compelling new story of our potential as a whole human species is emerging-a story of collaboration, citizenaction, dialogue and new understandings propelled by unprecedented levels of democratic freedom, multicultural exchange, and access tocommunication technologies. It is nothing less than the story of our
collective evolution.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTION
We recognize that the inner and outer aspects of life evolve together. A dramatic awakening in consciousness will involve an equally dramaticshift in outward aspects of our lives. In particular, we see the following as vital opportunities for our conscious evolution, both personally and collectively:

Cultivating a Paradigm of Aliveness: We regard the universe as deeply alive and conscious by nature. In a living universe, our sense of subtle connection and participation with life around us is the basis for a compassionate and cooperative approach to living.

Educating for an Evolving Consciousness: Awakening consciousness is the foundation for all the change we seek to see in the world. We can work to elevate our capacity for conscious reflection and creative action in our personal lives as well as our collective lives as communities. We must support research and educational strategies that optimize human capacities and explore the nature of consciousness.

Restoring Ecological Balance: The balance of planetary ecosystems is fundamental to our survival. We must reverse the pollution of our global commons-the water, air and soil that nourish all life. We must encourage the proliferation of clean, renewable energy sources and expend all necessary resources toward mitigating the effects of climate change.

Encouraging Conscious Media: We must find innovative ways to use the new electronic media as the mirror of our positive evolutionary story, investing in their capacity to reach across differences of generation, culture, religion, wealth, and gender to build a working consensus about our collective future.

Engaging in Social and Political Transformation: More sustainable ways of living will require the support of a more conscious democracy and vibrant civil society from which more enlightened leaders will emerge.  All individuals should be encouraged to use their gifts to create participatory, responsible and compassionate models of governance.

Working for Integrity in Commerce: Conscious businesses that are aware of the scope, depth, and long-range impacts of their actions are key to achieving sustainability.  Business must become an ethical steward of the Earth’s ecology and consciously establish an economic basis for a future of equitably shared abundance.

Promoting Health and Healing: The science of mind-body-spirit health has demonstrated the profound connection between the health of a whole person and the health of the system in which he or she lives. Whole systems healing, respecting both traditional knowledge and modern sciences, must be supported in physical, social, and spiritual domains.

Building Global Community: The new story is about all of us who share this planet. Together, we can create a culture of peace that eliminates the need for armed conflict, respecting and appreciating the glorious diversity of our human family.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VITAL
Our group has done its best to articulate possibilities for the evolution of consciousness at this crucial moment in time. Please reflect on this document, feel what resonates in your being and calls forth a response on your part. We invite you to discuss it with others, continuing this global conversation by adding to it the wisdom that is uniquely your own..Together, let us co-create a new narrative of conscious evolution that is a call to individual and collective action, birthing the most significant transformation of consciousness in history. Join in the Call to Conscious Evolution by signing the pledge now.

Tales from the Mommy Trenches: It Takes a Village to Raise a Child

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

istock_000006508876medium

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how we can teach our children to be good people.  I was inspired by a video clip I watched on age and wisdom at www.wisdombook.org.  Andrew Zuckerman interviewed 50 amazing people on their thoughts on wisdom.  The theme that develops is that of decency, dignity, love and how as a people, we seem to have lost wisdom.  It made me think about how little decency so many young men and women seem to have these days.  They lack respect for their elders, their peers, and even themselves.

This makes me want to try all the harder with my own children to teach them about love, understanding and respect even at a very young age.  I recently purchased the Dream Child CD, and my 11 month old Aiden enjoys hearing it before bedtime.  I like to play it because it gives me some special one-on-one time with him, relaxes him and helps him understand about love at the same time.

I see the need for companies like Hippy Grandma that promote ‘eco-love’, kindness, caring and giving.  As mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters we must learn from our mistakes and pass on our knowledge and experience to younger generations.  I want my children to care for people and care for the environment.  I want them to take responsibility for their own actions, and make others accountable for theirs.  I want them to respect older people for their wisdom, and understand how valuable their knowledge really is.  They have been around far longer, and have seen more than we have.  Most importantly I want them, when faced with a tough decision, to be equipped with the enough knowledge and values to be able to make the right choice even under peer pressure.

I really like the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. In some cultures, this is quite literally true. In North American culture, I believe we create our own symbolic villages with the people we choose to bring in to our ‘circle’ of friends and family.  As a hippy mommy, I like to know a diverse group of people.  Knowing all kinds of people help my children to learn to respect differences, and to realize that appearances can be deceiving.

We as a people can learn to have more patience and understanding towards others, and we can teach our children to do the same. Every person has the potential to change the world around them for the better.

Green Tips for March Part 3: Keep the Hippy Eco-Love Flowing!

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The hippies at Hippy Grandma give a “far out shout out” and than you to Melody Owen of Ethical Consumer for providing our green tips.

March Green Tips

Much to my dismay, I have recently read that we will be facing a drought this summer and water restrictions will be the norm. I live where once stood a great rain forest. Here on the west coast  of Canada, we are known for rain yet with our culture of abundance we still manage to use enough water that restrictions are necessary. Here are some tips on reducing the amount of this precious resource that we use each day.

Outdoors

Out in the garden, do not water lawns and plants that don’t need it or leave the garden hose on. Many of us now have automatic sprinkler systems that – although make life easier – can be quite wasteful. Save money and water by collecting rainwater from your downspouts in a barrel and use it to water the garden. Grass doesn’t need watering.

We hope you enjoy the groovy green tips!

The Kitchen

In the kitchen, do not leave the tap running when washing vegetables and dishes. Resist the urge to run a partially filled dishwasher; wait until it is full or fill a sink with water and do them by hand. Another water saver is to put dry waste in the garbage rather than the garburator. Finally, keep cold water in the fridge so you are not tempted to allow the tap to run until the water is cold.”

Holistic Health Tips: Mindful Feeding For Babies

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Holistic Health Information provided by Victoria Pawlowski, RD, MEd of Springwell Nutrition Group: Springwell provides nutritional assessment, counselling, consulting and psycho-nutritional therapy.  We are passionate about supporting you to transform your health with quality whole foods, optimal nutrition and mindful eating.

The following is an excerpt from Victoria’s upcoming book on “Mindful Feeding for Babies”.   Victoria also offers “Mindful Feeding for Babies” seminars each month through Capers Whole Foods Markets in Vancouver.

Each time we sit down with our baby and share food, we are building a feeding relationship – a nurturing relationship that goes very deep and secures attachment – the root of healthy emotional and psychological development.  The way we offer food, each meal and snack, has the potential to convey the following messages:

- I love you enough to provide only the healthiest foods

- I love you enough to create boundaries around our meals together

- I love you enough to take care of myself and model good eating

- I love you enough to practice mindfulness so that I can parent most effectively

- I trust you to know how much you need to eat

- I trust you to learn to grow into a good eater

The payoff is a healthy feeding relationship.  A child who is open to trying new foods, flexible about managing food in different situations, knows when they are hungry and full, knows that they can count on you for nourishment, knows that meal times are a safe and connected time of the day.  Knows that you trust them to figure it out.  Knows that you won’t control their eating.  This feeding relationship is a blueprint for the parenting for years to come. Mindfully feeding our babies offers the promise of more secure attachment in all areas of relationship.  This is a place to practice the essence of healthy parenting.  Knowing what is your job as parents and knowing what is your child’s job.  Respecting that boundary. Figuring out how to manage your own triggers around that.  Trusting.  Relaxing. Letting go and staying present. All the work of healthy parenting.  And it starts right from the beginning”.

We, the hippies at Hippy Grandma, hope that you have appreciated this information.  We are committed to supporting good health and mindfulness for all!

The Throne

Believe it or not, one of the biggest water wasters is a leaky toilet. If you are in for a new toilet, take a look at a low-flush toilet, which can save up to 16 litres of water every time you flush. If you are not looking for a new toilet then consider putting a weight in the tank to reduce the amount of water used with each flush.  Ask at your local hardware store for an appropriate weight that won’t harm the plumbing.”
